Year 2 have been Readers this week as part of World Book Day. Children have spent the day researching their author Joseph Coelho and created an author journal about him. They have then read his new poetry book and his new novel and shared what they enjoyed in some book talk. During the day, Year 5 have come over and Year 2 have had some reading for pleasure with the older children outside. In the afternoon, they have created their own character cards about their favourite character from a text and then compared these with their friends to see who was the top. We have ended the day with snuggle up and read with parents coming in for children to share their favourite books and have a story.
It’s been a busy couple of days and the children have been loving their reading!
Our slumber party was a real success on Wednesday and the children loved our book called Billy’s Bucket by Kes Gray.
We learnt about the author Nadia Shireen on World Book Day and the children enjoyed listening to her stories and drawing in her illustrative style.
This week year 3 have had their Belong, Believe and Achieve workshop. They have thoroughly enjoyed showing parents their money skills in maths, how many bones in the human body they can name from our Science lessons, finding the names of countries that support FairTrade and they also showcased their amazing work on the glockenspiels from music.
This week Year 4 have been exploring ancient Egypt. We have looked how mummies were made and what the Pharaohs took with them into the afterlife. We’ve learned all about Howard Carter and his famous discovery.
Reception have been amazing at caring for our new arrivals in Reception this week. They were so happy when 10 chicks hatched from their eggs. They loved being able to stroke them for the first time!
Nursery enjoyed pancakes during snack time today. We discussed where Shrove Tuesday came from and how it is the start of Lent. The children enjoyed picking their topping and spreading it over the pancake.
Today, Year 6 started to investigate volume. We were tasked with making different cuboids which had the same volume. We had a great time and enjoyed exploring our learning practically.
This week Year 2 have been focusing on shapes in Maths. They have been learning to identify 2D and 3D shapes by systematically counting the shapes faces, edges and vertices. They have then applied this knowledge to solve reasoning questions by making different shapes out of resources and finding different ways to do this.
This week year 3 have started exploring our new History Topic of the Stone Age to Iron Age. The children started identifying a range of tools and weapons. They then considered when these tools were used and placed their ideas on the timeline along with familiar dates such a their birthday’s and important dates in history such as the birth of Alan Turing and when Mary Anning first discovered a fossil. Then on Wednesday the children had a special visit from a Cave Man who brought artefacts and costumes to teach the children about life in the Stone Age.
This week we have started our new Science topic of ‘Everyday Materials’. We identified the material used to make lots of everyday objects we find at home and in school. Our learning will move onto investigating the properties of different materials and their suitability for different purposes.
